Artist Statement
I create colorful relief drawings from the by-products of my sculptures—studio detritus such as old paint mixing palettes, bits of foam board and paper from my studio floor— which I combine with other low-end materials like tape and marker. These unpretentious materials reflect my fondness for frugality and jerry-rigged construction.
My approach to making these drawings is intuitive and energetic; my goal is to achieve a freshness or raw quality—a go-for-broke-aesthetic that is courageous and timely. Ultimately, my desire is to take mundane or cast away materials and create drawings that are jewel-like, beautiful and special, that transcend the particular and approach the universal.
